Bubendorf, Switzerland, Monday, September 5, 2016 – CIS Pharma has concluded the development of a novel contact lens coating technology based on the Cellophil® Smart Polymer platform. The technology has been shown to increase surface wettability and lubricity and is expected to increase the wear comfort of silicone hydrogel contact lenses. CIS Pharma has created novel bio-inspired polymer derivatives based on its Cellophil® Smart Polymer platform. The Cellophil® Smart Polymer coating technology improves the wettability of silicone hydrogel contact lenses. In addition, the coating is designed to prevent the adsorption of proteins and lipids onto the contact lens. The established coating procedure can be integrated into current industrial contact lens manufacturing processes.

About contact lens materials

The latest generation of contact lens materials is a combination of hydrogel and silicone materials. Silicone has high oxygen permeability but only a limited wettability and is thus not optimal for use on the eye. The contact lens surface therefore is treated with plasma to form hydrophilic silica islands, ensuring that the lenses comprise high oxygen permeability without affecting the lubricity and wear comfort.
